Lumi, crochet arctic fox pattern

Lumi is finished and he turned out ever so cuddly and soft. I wanted this crochet arctic fox to feel and look soft, but not to have a completely fuzzy appearance. To get this result, I first brushed him, and then cut off all the long hairs, which gave the exact result I hoped for. You can still see the crochet stitches, but Lumi looks furry too.

Working on this arctic fox felt a bit odd from time to time, as I already designed a red fox in the past. I absolutely did not want this fox to look the same, but that seemed to be a bit inevitable, as they both are foxes and I do prefer my designs to have that realistic touch. Luckily, there are some major differences in the foxes and my fox patterns are vey different in shape and sizes although they look like cousins. This fox feels younger to me, whilst he also is more compact. Lumi has a very sweet appearance and I love his subtile colour changes.

I choose to make this crochet arctic fox in two colours. A warm grey for the paws and edges of the ears and a milky white for the rest of the body. However, this fox would also look very good in just white. Lumi is made with Lett Lopi, a 100% wool. It is easy to brush and gets a very soft result, but acrylic yarns also look good when brushed. Lumi is sitting 5,5 inch / 14 cm tall.

A pretty big cat

LynxLast week I started working on my new crochet animal pattern, a crochet lynx. I am quite excited to make this animal. Before I start designing a new pattern, I always look online to see what other designers have come up with. First of all to be sure my pattern will be nothing like theirs but also just to see what is offered. When I searched for a crochet lynx pattern, there wasn’t much to find. This pattern might become rather unique, which makes it extra fun and challenging.

Lynxes are incredibly colourful animals. Their fur consist out of all kins of colour ranges and lynxes can also be spotted. To make the pattern simple and not to expansive for everyone to make, I will use three colours for this crochet lynx.

And one slightly silly note, I am quite awful in drawing cats. Drawing this basic sketch took me hours. I have no idea why that is, other animals aren’t a problem, but when I draw cats, they always look ridiculous. Fortunately this lynx does look fairly smart.

Rupert, crochet reindeer pattern

Meet Rupert, a distant relative of Rudolph. He’s a crochet reindeer that feels like winter, with hot coco and chocolate chip cookies.

This time,  my goal was to create an original crochet reindeer pattern, which also easily can be turned into a Rudolph red nosed reindeer. When I choose the colours for Rupert, I almost couldn’t wait to see the end result. And he turned out exactly as I hoped for, I absolutely love the colour combination. He looks so rustic and warm. Also, a dark red nose will look beautiful with these colours.

I wasn’t sure to give Rupert eyepatches, because reindeer have these light eyelids but adding big eye patches did’t feel right, so I decided to go for simple embroidered lines neatly around the eyes. They make him look just as enthousiastic as in the sketch.

The antlers were also something I worried a bit about when I was working on this crochet reindeer pattern, because they needed to be in balance with the rest of the head. I was afraid they would look too big. But that isn’t at all how it turned out, they look perfect. I know real reindeer have much larger antlers, but it has to look nice on a crochet doll.

Look, it’s a ……..

I had this lovely afternoon in the forest, taking pictures of my new crochet animal, surrounded by wildlife. There were lots of birds and young chicks chatting around me, bumblebees were zooming cheerfully above the ground and, a red squirrel was laughing at me from behind a tree.

I finally managed to get a sharp picture of a squirrel, didn’t I!

While busy taking pictures of Floro and clacking away mosquitoes, I heard this strange sound behind me. Suddenly I realized that THAT’s a squirrel sound! So I turned around and saw a red squirrel spying on me from a tree. When he saw me turning around he quickly fled higher so I couldn’t see him anymore. I waited a few minutes, while being eaten, but saw him no more. A pitty, I hoped to get a picture of him, you know, me taking pictures of Floro and the squirrel who spied on us….Would be so perfect.

Well anyway, here’s a first glimpse of Floro, the pattern will be available in my shop on thursday!

Balloo, crochet sheep pattern

My favorite moment of designing crochet patterns is when my new doll is finished and I can take pictures of him. It’s so much fun to do, playing with my fuzzy new friend and I can see the finished project for the first time with a fresh view. After a long time working on a project, I become sort of over-critical and can’t see clearly how it looks anymore. But when the pictures are finished I get all happy and proud.

So, I present Balloo, my crochet sheep pattern. I called him Balloo, because he’s based on sheep from Drenthe and there is a big hurdle of these sheep in the surroundings of the village Balloo, nearby where I live. And actually, Balloo is a crochet lamb, not a sheep yet.

Son's Popkes

I opened a Twitter account and of course, needed to customize my home page. A picture of a pile of popkes seemed like a nice header. Oops, I left out the lop rabbits, stupid! They where standing right behind me on a chest…..

A while back, I also opened a twitter account, but deleted it shortly after because, well because I only had 2 followers. I was afraid to become the loneliest tweeter in the world. I’m not really the tweeting kind and wasn’t going to interact that much. Still feel that way, but I did want to ‘own’ the @SonsPopkes, because who knows what happens in the future. I will try to become a bit more social and tweet. I’ll see what happens.

Oh, I haven’t tweeted yet, but I will soon, promise!
